The brutal killings of two lawyers, Chief Jude Oguejiofor and Victor Onwubiko Esq, within days of each other has sparked outrage and demands for justice from the legal community across Nigeria.

Chief Oguejiofor was kidnapped and murdered in Nnewi while Onwubiko was ambushed and killed along the Okigwe-Uturu Road last week.

In a statement, lawyer Soseipiriye Long Williams Esq condemned the twin murders as lives taken “in cold blood” which he likened to “a pogrom.”

Williams, the former Governor of the Eastern Bar Forum, lamented at the lack of progress in solving such crimes in Nigeria which has become a “crime scene.”

“How did we get to this sorry pass? Life has become nasty, brutish and short. The Hobbesian state of nature has crept on us,” said Williams.

According to him, hopes in security agencies successfully investigating the murders are misplaced. He accused them of repeatedly failing to protect lives and property or bring perpetrators to justice.

Williams called upon security organizations to act decisively in solving the recent killings to restore waning public trust in their efficacy.

“It’s time to prove they are worth what they swore to protect. We ask for no more. We must bring pressure to bear on the security agencies. It has become twin deaths too many,” he asserted.

The statement has resonated widely amongst lawyers as it gives voice to mounting frustration over worsening insecurity and violence targeted at legal practitioners.
