South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster has appointed Darline Graham Nordone, the younger sister of the late Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, to complete the remaining months of her brother’s term in the United States Senate.

McMaster announced the appointment on Monday, July 13, 2026, at the South Carolina Statehouse, saying Nordone would serve until Graham’s current term expires in January 2027. She is expected to be sworn in during the week, becoming the first woman to represent South Carolina in the US Senate.

“It’s my honor to ask his little sister Darline Graham to finish his work for him now,” McMaster said while announcing the appointment.

Nordone accepted the responsibility, saying: “Lindsey has always been there for me. And now, I will be there for him.”

She described her brother as an outstanding leader and a genuinely good man, adding that she was determined to continue his work during her temporary tenure.

President Donald Trump publicly backed Nordone for the position earlier on Monday, describing her appointment as a fitting tribute to Graham, who was one of his closest political allies and a prominent voice on foreign policy.

McMaster, however, disclosed that he had spoken with Nordone in the early hours of Sunday and asked her to accept the position. He said Trump later described the proposed appointment as a “great idea” when informed about it.

Graham died unexpectedly on Saturday night at the age of 71. A preliminary medical examiner’s report indicated that he suffered an aortic dissection, a tear in the body’s main artery.

The late senator never married or had children and shared an exceptionally close relationship with his younger sister.

Their mother died when Graham was about 20 and Nordone was 12. Their father died less than two years later, leaving Graham, then in his early twenties, to take responsibility for raising his teenage sister and later become her legal guardian.

Nordone frequently accompanied her brother during important moments in his political career, including campaign events and Senate swearing-in ceremonies. She was also present when he filed documents earlier in 2026 to seek a fifth Senate term.

Nordone, who lives in Lexington, previously worked as an optician and with South Carolina state agencies, including the Commission for the Blind and the Department of Employment and Workforce. She graduated from the College of Charleston and holds a master’s degree in rehabilitation counselling.

Her appointment is temporary, as South Carolina Republicans are expected to select a new candidate to contest the November 3 general election for a full six-year Senate term beginning in January 2027.

Under the state’s proposed timetable, candidates will file for the special Republican primary from July 21. The primary is scheduled for August 11, with a possible runoff fixed for August 25.

The winner of the Republican process will contest the November election against the Democratic candidate for the Senate seat.

However, questions have been raised over the compressed timetable because federal law generally requires ballots for military and overseas voters to be distributed at least 45 days before a federal election.

Graham had represented South Carolina in the US Senate since January 2003 and was seeking a fifth term before his death.
