Renowned Nigerian author, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, has raised deep concerns over the worsening economic conditions in the country, lamenting how the situation has driven many once-secure middle-class Nigerians into poverty.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Amazing Africans, Adichie said the level of suffering among ordinary citizens should be the most important metric for assessing Nigeria’s political leadership.

“Life has become so hard in Nigeria, and me I can see it,” she said. “For example, people who were formerly kind of securely middle class not that life was rosy for them, but they got by are now people who beg and are in need. That worries me greatly.”

Describing the hardship as “terrible,” the award-winning novelist said the skyrocketing cost of food and basic essentials had made survival extremely difficult, especially for low-income earners.

“People talk about the stock market. Personally, I don’t really care about those sorts of things,” Adichie noted. “What I care about is: that person earning minimum wage how is that person getting on in this economy? It’s the suffering that worries me the most.”

While she clarified that her comments were not meant to justify criminal behavior, Adichie warned that economic desperation could push even ordinarily law-abiding citizens toward dangerous decisions.

“It’s not to excuse crime, but I think when life gets very hard, even people who before would not have considered certain things suddenly are willing to, and that’s dangerous to society,” she said.

The Half of a Yellow Sun author also reflected on her literary journey, revealing that her critically acclaimed debut novel, Purple Hibiscus, was rejected at least 25 times before it was finally published. Despite the setbacks, she said giving up on writing was never an option.

“Writing is really what I believe I am here to do; it’s a bit spiritual,” she said. “I feel that it is a gift I am given. So even if I hadn’t been published, I would still be writing today.”
