The High Court of Lagos State, TBS Division, on Tuesday, January 14, 2026, sentenced truck driver Okpara Kingsley Onyekachi to life imprisonment for the death of a Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) officer during routine traffic enforcement.

The case, The State v. Okpara Kingsley Onyekachi (Suit No. LD/24692C/2024), arose from a fatal crash in Orile Iganmu, Lagos State, on November 16, 2023.

Investigations revealed that Onyekachi, driving a 40-feet container-laden truck at excessive speed, collided with a stationary mini-truck stopped by the FRSC for inspection. The impact fatally injured Deputy Chief Road Marshal Assistant (DCRMA) Ajomale, who was lawfully performing his duties.

The court found Onyekachi’s conduct grossly negligent, reckless, and unlawful, rejecting claims of an accident, and convicted him of involuntary manslaughter under the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

Reacting to the judgment, FRSC Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed described the ruling as a victory for justice and road safety enforcement, sending a clear message that reckless driving, especially by operators of heavy-duty vehicles, will no longer be tolerated. He emphasised the Corps’ commitment to pursuing justice for every fallen officer and innocent road user.

The FRSC further pledged to intensify enforcement, support prosecutions, and collaborate with stakeholders to curb dangerous driving behaviours. The Corps also honoured the memory of DCRMA Ajomale, describing his sacrifice as a solemn reminder of the risks faced daily by road safety personnel.
