Former First Vice President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), John Aikpokpo-Martins, has commended the National Judicial Council (NJC) for what he described as bold and commendable action in sanctioning Justice T. N. Nzeukwu and recommending nine judges of the Imo State High Court for compulsory retirement.

In a public statement released under his popular slogan “Let’s Do It!”, Aikpokpo-Martins said the NJC’s recent disciplinary actions demonstrate a strong commitment to cleansing the judiciary and restoring public confidence in the system.

“The National Judicial Council’s recent sanctions against Hon. Justice T. N. Nzeukwu for inordinately accepting to be sworn in as the acting Chief Judge of Imo State in violation of section 271(4) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999, and the recommendation for compulsory retirement of nine judges for falsification and alteration of their ages, are a welcome development,” he stated.

Aikpokpo-Martins noted that these measures reflect the NJC’s proactive approach in tackling corruption and enforcing ethical standards within the judiciary.

“I commend the NJC for taking proactive steps to address corruption within the judiciary, demonstrating its commitment to upholding the integrity and dignity of the judicial system,” he added.

He emphasized that the move is a strong reminder that no one is above the law and that public trust in the judiciary depends on transparency, accountability, and strict adherence to the rule of law.

“I encourage the NJC to continue its efforts in ensuring that the judiciary remains a bastion of justice, integrity, and transparency,” he concluded.

Aikpokpo-Martins’ endorsement of the NJC’s action aligns with growing calls from the legal community and civil society for a cleaner, more trustworthy judiciary in Nigeria.
