A former Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Lagos Branch, Lateef Omoyemi Akangbe, SAN, FCIArb(UK), has extended his goodwill to the NBA Garki Branch on the occasion of its 2025 Annual Law Week, urging lawyers to embrace innovation and technology in advancing justice and democratic governance.

In his message, Akangbe commended the Executive Committee, the Law Week Planning Committee, and all members of the branch for organising the event. He described the Law Week theme, “Law, Technology and Society”, as both timely and necessary.

“Technology has become an inevitable force in shaping the future of justice delivery and democratic governance,” he said, citing advancements such as virtual courtrooms, digital evidence management, and electronic transmission of election results.

Quoting the late Lord Denning in Parker v. Parker (1953), Akangbe noted: “If we never do anything which has not been done before, we shall never get anywhere. The law will stand still while the rest of the world goes on…”

According to him, resistance to technological reforms, particularly in Nigeria’s electoral process, is often rooted in fear rather than principle. “Those who resist such reforms often do so not out of caution, but from a deep-seated fear that technology may frustrate their desperation,” he asserted, adding that they do not wish the people’s will to prevail.

He expressed hope that the 2025 Law Week would inspire lawyers to boldly embrace innovation and recommit themselves to justice that reflects the best aspirations of society.

“Congratulations once again,” the message concluded.
