A shocking video obtained by SaharaReporters shows basins scattered throughout the courtroom to catch water dripping from the leaking roof, while lawyers scrambled to protect their critical court documents from water damage.
The incident, which disrupted court proceedings and forced the dismissal of litigants and their lawyers, highlights the urgent need for infrastructure upgrades in Lagos State’s judiciary system. The chaotic scene captured on video is not an isolated issue, as many courts in Nigeria, including its commercial hub, Lagos, struggle with inadequate infrastructure, outdated facilities, and insufficient resources.
According to a source who shared the video and photos of the court, the situation goes beyond just the physical structure and also affects the administration of justice. “Customary courts, like the one in Ikeja, play a vital role in resolving disputes, especially for the common man, as they are the cheapest form of resolving disputes. However, the poor condition of the court and alleged corruption within the court process can undermine trust in the justice system,” the source said.
The neglect of the customary court’s infrastructure raises questions about the government’s commitment to justice and accountability, despite local government efforts to renovate some infrastructure. The source lamented, “Despite the local government’s renovation efforts on few infrastructure, the customary court’s roof remains unattended to, sparking concerns about priorities.”
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for urgent reform and investment in Nigeria’s justice system to ensure that courts can function effectively and maintain public trust.
