Islamic cleric, Sheikh Yahaya Jingir, has called on Muslims in Kano State to support Muslim-Muslim political tickets, saying the arrangement must continue in order to sustain what he described as Muslim political dominance in Nigeria.

Jingir made the remarks in a speech delivered in Hausa at a political event tagged “Abba Go Again,” organised in support of Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf. The governor was also present at the event.
In the video of the event, the cleric praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for promoting the Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket and described himself as one of the strong advocates of the arrangement.
“Special thanks to my political hero, Bola Tinubu, who raised the flag of this political ideology, describing it as a purely Muslim-Muslim coalition,” Jingir said.
“I am among the staunch advocates of the Muslim-Muslim ticket, and I call on you to come together for Muslim-Muslim ticket,” he added.
The cleric said opposition to the Muslim-Muslim ticket from Christians and other religious groups would not stop his campaign for the arrangement.
“I am aware that the infidels are embittered by this word. However, are there no Christians alike? Are there no Jews? Are there no traditionalists? Have I done anything wrong by merely campaigning for a Muslim-Muslim ticket?” he said.
“Have I stopped the Christians from their own slogans? Have I stopped traditionalists from a similar campaign?”
Reiterating his position, Jingir declared: “But as a Muslim, I repeat it, Muslim-Muslim! No going back on this.”
He also dismissed arguments that Nigeria is a democracy with citizens from different religious backgrounds, saying majority votes should determine political outcomes.
“Some would say it’s a democracy and there are people who are not Muslims; are you their spokesperson?” he asked.
“But we pray and observe fasting, and it’s said that the majority carries the votes,” he added.
Jingir urged Muslims at the event to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards ahead of future elections, saying they must use their voting strength to prove their numerical advantage.
“I urge all of us here to go and get our voters’ cards ready. Let’s show the infidels their limit, who claim they are more populous than us in Nigeria. They are lying!” he said.
The cleric suggested that the Muslim-Muslim ticket had helped defeat opponents who, according to him, would otherwise have claimed to be more populous.
“If it wasn’t for my stance on a Muslim-Muslim ticket, somebody would have claimed they are more populous than us. But by the grace of Allah, we defeated them so ignominiously that they did not even make it to the second place in the polls, did they? They came third after all,” he said.
He then publicly declared support for Muslim-Muslim candidates and asked the Muslim community to do the same.
“Therefore my vote is for a Muslim-Muslim candidate! What about you, the Muslim umma?” he asked.
Jingir also warned his audience not to be deceived by people he described as having a “dark history,” before making an allegation linking Christians to the Maitatsine movement.
“Don’t allow anybody to deceive you. People with a dark history, who are responsible for planting a bomb in our mosque in Kano, calling themselves Maitatsine, the so-called Christians in disguise,” he said.
He did not provide evidence for the claim. The Maitatsine movement is widely known as a radical religious movement that emerged in northern Nigeria decades ago and was associated with violent disturbances, particularly in the 1980s.
The cleric also praised what he described as a government that promotes family values, saying such policies deserved support.
“But we here support this kind of government that would establish a family value, spending money to ensure husband and wife and children are growing up. They are even converting to Islam in America,” he said.
Well-meaning Nigerians, including lawyers, have continued to advise citizens that religion does not put food on the table, nor does it guarantee good governance. What Nigeria needs are leaders who uphold justice, fairness, competence, accountability and respect for human dignity, not those who exploit religious sentiments for political gain.
They warned that clerics who preach religious dominance in politics should first ask themselves why their preaching has not ended terrorism, banditry, killings and poverty in the country. According to them, Nigerians must understand that some of these divisive messages are driven more by the pursuit of money, influence and political power than by any genuine concern for good governance.
They also urged such preachers to look at developed Muslim-majority countries and ask whether progress was achieved through this kind of poor and dangerous preaching, or through education, discipline, justice, economic planning, respect for citizens and strong institutions.
