* LAWYERS MUST LEARN TO IMPROVE THEIR PRACTICE The desire for knowledge is the foundation for learning. So, lawyers must learn the basic tools of their trade. They should never be tired to learn. They are to learn from their seniors and even from judges. This was the admonition of the Acting Chief Justice of the Federation, Honourable Justice Walter Onneghen, while presiding at the Supreme Court session in Abuja. He stated further that the standard of practice must improve from time to time. Time was when only lawyers seven years post call were allowed to appear in the Supreme Court, but that has been jettisoned in the interest of liberalism now, but the conduct of lawyers seem to suggest a reversion to that old system. Especially for senior lawyers, they need to up their game and set a good standard for those who are learning and training under them. The juniors must develop an interest to learn and must keep asking and asking questions until they reach the stage of maturity at the Bar. Nobody should take anything for granted at all. In this regard the court the CJN stated that the Supreme Court is worried with the seeming decline in the quality of practice at the Bar but the Court has taken the option of assisting to train lawyers as they appear before it in the interest of the friendly tradition between the Bar and the Bench. However, this should not be taken for granted.]]>
