A displeased lawyer, Tobechukwu Nweke, has registered his displeasure for not being able to register for the 2021 Annual General Conference, to enable him to physically attend the forthcoming Conference as a delegate.

Nweke in an open letter to the President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Olumide Akpata, noted that AGC is an avenue not only for sharing of knowledge but for lawyers to unite and or reunite with others.

Open Letter to the President of the

Nigerian Bar Association.

2021 NBA CONFERENCE: HE VERY HARSH MEASURE

I write to express what I consider not just my displeasure but that of most lawyers who by the design of the NBA, have practically been shut out from physically attending the 2021 NBA Conference. I have, just like some other lawyers, tried to make payment for the conference for a few days now but realized that the portal no longer has room for payment and registration for the conference except for those who wish to participate virtually.

NBA Conference has always been one great opportunity for hosting lawyers, reuniting with each other and sharing knowledge and thoughts. I believe it is an entitlement of every member of the Nigerian Bar Association to attend the conference subject however to payment of the prescribed fees.

One would expect that late registration for the conference ought to attract higher cost as a penal measure and to cater for any planning inconveniences occasioned by the late registration, rather than shut lawyers out completely from attending the conference. Shutting down the registration portal for physical attendance, more than a week to the conference, is to say the least too oppressive. As a matter of fact, it is expected that registration will remain continuous up till the day of and at the location of the conference.

By this very accommodating measure of shutting the portal, a lot of lawyers have been denied the benefit of this conference. I must equally say that a lot of lawyers were not notified that the portal would be closed at the time it was closed. At a time like this when the Bar Conference has not been held since 2019 due to the Covid 19 pandemic, a much more lenient approach to the registration targeted at accommodating lawyers desiring to attend would have been better.

Just my thoughts.

Yours

Tobechukwu Nweke
