A lawyer has raised concerns regarding a possible breach of Rule 39 of the Nigerian Rules of Professional Conduct for Legal Practitioners (RPC).

The concerns arose after a notary public was found to be advertising their services on a signpost, potentially violating the regulations governing the marketing practices of legal practitioners in Nigeria.

The signpost on the office of the said law firm, reads Chief (Dr) Victor Dudu & Co., a Notary Public of Nigeria, and is located on Km 47 Lekki-Epe Expressway opposite Ipeju-Lekki Local Government Secretariat. It listed several services offered by the law firm. 

These services included all types of affidavits, declarations of age, sworn changes of name, statements on marriage matters, and the notarization of various documents.

However, according to Rule 39 of the RPC, lawyers are explicitly prohibited from engaging in any form of advertising, touting, or soliciting professional work that may be considered false, misleading, or deceptive. The rule aims to maintain professional ethics and ensure the integrity of legal services in Nigeria.

The concerned lawyer, who preferred to remain anonymous, highlighted the potential violation of the RPC by the notary public’s advertisement on the signpost. The lawyer emphasized that such public communication, which promotes specific legal services, may be in breach of the rules governing the legal profession.

Legal professionals are expected to adhere strictly to the provisions outlined in the RPC to uphold the standards and ethics of the legal profession. Violations of these regulations may result in disciplinary action or sanctions against the offending lawyer or law firm.

The lawyer calling attention to this matter urges relevant authorities, such as the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), to investigate the alleged breach and take appropriate actions to enforce the rules and maintain the professional integrity of the legal community.
