A Lagos-based legal practitioner, Akeem O. Aponmade, Esq., has written to the President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, alleging that his NBA member portal account was hijacked six days to the Association’s national election.

In a letter dated July 13, 2026, titled “Protest Over Hijack Of My NBA Account 6 Days To Election,” Aponmade said he received two consecutive emails from the NBA concerning a password reset and password update, even though he never requested any password change.

According to him, the first email was titled “Reset Password OTP” and contained a one-time password for resetting his account. He said another email followed almost immediately with the caption “Password Updated Successfully.”

Aponmade said he immediately attempted to log into the NBA portal with his registered username and password, but was unable to access the account, as the portal returned the message: “Invalid email/SCN and password combination.”

The screenshots attached to his letter showed the NBA member portal login page, the OTP request email and the password update notification. The Supreme Court Number displayed on the portal screenshot has been withheld for privacy.

The lawyer insisted that he did not request a password change and did not authorise any password update on his NBA account.

He said, given his knowledge of information technology, he did not believe the incident was accidental or a mere computer glitch, alleging that the action appeared to have been carried out by someone with access to the NBA portal’s backend.

Aponmade asked who changed his password, whether the person intended to use his credentials to vote in the July 18 NBA election, and what else may have been done with his personal information on the NBA portal.

He warned that the incident was troubling, especially coming at a time when Nigerian lawyers are preparing to elect a new NBA President and amid existing allegations of bias against the ECNBA and the NBA leadership.

According to him, such an incident could undermine confidence in the fairness and integrity of the election, as lawyers may begin to wonder how many other members’ accounts may have been compromised.

He told Osigwe that responsibility for the portal rests with the NBA leadership, stressing that whatever happens on the platform should be of serious concern to the President of the Association.

Aponmade therefore urged the NBA President to ensure that his access to the portal is restored without further interference.

He also asked Osigwe to protect the integrity of the NBA portal by ensuring accountability from those with backend access, identify and publicly disclose anyone involved in the alleged compromise, and report the matter to the Nigeria Police Force for investigation and possible prosecution.

He described the alleged compromise as wrong, unconscionable and criminal, insisting that anyone found responsible should be made to face the law.

Aponmade signed the letter as a member of NBA Ikeja.
