“With great grief in our hearts the Law Students’ Association of Nigeria expresses sadness at the colossal, heart-breaking loss of two promising Nigerians, 17-year-old Tina Ezekwe and 22-year-old Vera Uwaila under very unpalatable circumstances over the past week.

“Tina, who was reported to have been killed by a trigger-happy police officer at Berger, Lagos state and Vera who was raped and gruesomely murdered in Benin City were young Nigerians with irreplaceable potentials and bright futures which have sad been cut abruptly.

“Our hearts go out to their families and loved ones as we pray they receive the fortitude to bear their unfortunate losses which has thrown the nation and most especially the student community (where LAWSAN belongs) into deep melancholy.

“As we commiserate their deaths, we call on the security agencies to ensure that the perpetrators of both heinous acts are brought to book. We hold that these deaths must not be swept under the carpet, but must be thoroughly investigated with the aim of meting out justice.

“The lost lives cannot be replaced, but those responsible for their loss must not go scott free, as it will be highly detrimental to our society and may lead to victims resorting to self-help.

“Lastly, we encourage all Nigerians to put our country in prayers even in these trying times, that the rampant spate of reckless killings be abated and we live together as one peaceful, happy people again.”
