The Law Students Association of Nigeria (LAWSAN), an umbrella body for all law students in Nigeria, has issued a statement strongly condemning the position taken by the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) against the Anti – Sexual Harassment Bill at its public hearing session organised by the Senate on the 17th of February 2020.

In a Press Release issued by the National Director of the Students’ Rights Wing of the Association, Munir Shuaibu Ishaq, and made available to TheNigeriaLawyer (TNL), the law students body firmly posits that it shows ASUU’s little or zero concern in the fight for the protection of students who are victims of sexual harassment in our tertiary institutions.

Press Release on ASUU’s Response at the Anti-Sexual Harassment Bill Senate Public. Hearing

“The Law Students Association of Nigeria, Directorate of Students’ Rights condemns with vehemence the attitude of the Academic Staff Union of Universities at the Public Hearing on the
Anti-Sexual Harassment Bill 2019 organized by the Senate on the 17th of February 2020.

The ASUU President, Professor Biodun Ogunyemi expressly kicked against the approval of the said bill.

“The Directorate firmly condemn this gesture by the ASUU leadership as it reflects its little or zero concerning the fight for the complete and total eradication of cases of students been victims of sexual harassment in our tertiary institutions. The instrument of the law is the best in preserving law and order, protecting rights and maintaining its sanctity.

The institutional measures put in place referred to by the ASUU president, as can be seen, have not been effective. The Anti-Sexual Harassment Bill 2019 sponsored by the DeputySenate President is completely laudable and one that should be passed.”
