Former Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Lagos Branch, Lateef Omoyemi Akangbe, SAN, FCIArb (UK), has called on lawyers to stand firm in defense of justice and the rule of law as the NBA Ijebu-Ode Branch holds its 2025 Annual Law Week.

In a goodwill message to the branch, Akangbe praised the Executive Committee and members for their resilience, while commending the Law Week’s theme, “Law and Governance: The Nexus,” as timely and relevant.
“We live in a country where those in power treat the law as a weapon against the weak and a shield for the rich,” Akangbe said. “The ruling class obeys the law only when it suits them and flouts it with impunity when it does not. This must stop.”
He stressed that the law was never meant to oppress citizens, but rather to serve as a check on the abuse of power.
Akangbe urged members of the Ijebu-Ode Bar to use the occasion of the Law Week to call for accountability, demand adherence to constitutional principles, and work towards reclaiming justice for the common man.
“May your deliberations be rich, your voices unshaken, and your impact enduring,” he concluded.
