*Urges Legal Community To Invest In Education, Mentorship, And Well-Being Of Women Lawyers
*Emphasizes Urgency In Achieving Gender Parity, Refuses To Accept Century-Long Timeline

In a powerful message delivered on International Women’s Day 2025, esteemed legal practitioner Lateef Omoyemi Akangbe, SAN, called for intensified efforts to achieve genuine gender equality within the legal profession and beyond. Speaking on the theme ‘Accelerate Action’, Akangbe emphasized the urgent need to close the gender gap and create a more equitable future for women in law.

Akangbe acknowledged the significant progress made by women in breaking barriers within the legal field but stressed that challenges persist. He outlined key areas that require immediate attention, including closing the pay gap, promoting women in leadership positions, investing in education and mentorship, and prioritizing the well-being of women in the profession.

“Despite notable progress, the World, the labour Market, Educational Institutions, the workforce and our social communities still warn that, at our current pace, achieving full parity may take over a century; a timeline we refuse to accept,” Akangbe stated, underlining the urgency of the situation.

Akangbe urged the legal community to ensure equal compensation for equal work, recognizing the valuable contributions of all legal professionals regardless of gender. He also called for the championing and support of women ascending to pivotal roles within legal institutions, emphasizing the importance of representation at the highest levels.

Furthermore, Akangbe highlighted the need for robust educational and mentorship opportunities to empower women to excel in specialized legal fields and leadership positions. He also addressed the unique challenges women face in balancing their professional and personal lives, advocating for the creation of environments where they can thrive.

As a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Akangbe emphasized the profound duty of legal practitioners to uphold justice and equality. He called upon the legal community to commit to this journey with unwavering determination, stating, “By accelerating our actions today, we pave the way for a more equitable and just legal community tomorrow.”

Akangbe’s message resonates with the global push for gender equality and serves as a rallying cry for the legal profession to lead by example in creating a more inclusive and equitable society.
