The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention has reported 14 new confirmed cases of Lassa fever, bringing the country’s cumulative number of infections in 2026 to 1,035 and the death toll to 252.

According to the NCDC’s latest situation report, the new cases were recorded during epidemiological week 33, covering August 10 to 16, in Ondo, Bauchi, Edo and Benue states.

The agency said the 14 new infections represented an increase from the four confirmed cases reported in epidemiological week 32, when infections were recorded in Ondo and Edo states.

With the latest figures, the cumulative case fatality rate rose to 24.4 per cent, significantly higher than the 18.6 per cent recorded during the corresponding period in 2025.

In epidemiological week 32, Nigeria had recorded a cumulative 1,021 confirmed Lassa fever cases and 240 deaths, with a case fatality rate of 23.5 per cent.

The week 32 figure itself represented a decline from the 17 confirmed cases recorded during epidemiological week 31, highlighting fluctuations in the weekly transmission of the viral disease.

By week 33, the NCDC said at least one confirmed case of Lassa fever had been reported in 23 states across 117 local government areas of the country.

The latest figures mean that 12 additional deaths were reflected in the cumulative national count between the week 32 and week 33 reports, while confirmed infections increased by 14 cases.

The NCDC said it would continue surveillance and response activities across affected states as Lassa fever remains a significant public health concern in Nigeria.

The agency’s latest data also underline the continuing severity of the disease, with nearly one in four confirmed cases recorded so far in 2026 resulting in death based on the reported case fatality rate.

Health authorities have continued to monitor affected states and local government areas, with surveillance, case detection and response measures expected to remain active as the country tracks further transmission.
