As part of efforts to strengthen ties between government and traditional institutions, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has presented land allocation documents to members of the FCT Council of Traditional Rulers.

Speaking during a meeting with the council in Abuja on Friday, Wike announced a total waiver of all statutory fees attached to the land titles, explaining that the decision was based on directives from President Bola Tinubu.

The minister acknowledged the historical presence of indigenous communities in the FCT, stressing that their contributions and long-standing ties to the land must be recognised.

“We cannot deny the fact that there are indigenous people who were here before the creation of the FCT,” Wike said, adding that it was important to extend recognition and support to those who had lived in the territory for generations.

He questioned the fairness of denying land ownership benefits to traditional rulers who have played key roles in maintaining peace, stating that such stakeholders deserve to be rewarded.

Wike also commended the monarchs for their role in ensuring peaceful conduct during the recent Area Council elections, describing the exercise as the most peaceful in the history of the FCT.

To further support their responsibilities, the minister pledged to provide utility vehicles to all traditional rulers in the territory.

He noted that it would be unjust to require traditional rulers to pay huge sums for land they have historically occupied.

Beyond land reforms, Wike highlighted ongoing infrastructure projects across satellite towns, including the dualisation of the Airport-Kuje road, the Bwari-Zuba road, developments in Apo/Karshi and Gbazango, among others.

Responding on behalf of the council, the Ona of Abaji and Chairman, Alhaji Adamu Baba Yunusa, expressed appreciation for the gesture and assured the administration of continued support from traditional institutions.
