The Chief Judge of Kogi State, Hon. Justice Josiah Majebi, has inaugurated High Court appeal panels with a call on legal practitioners to uphold their integrity as ministers in the temple of justice.

The inauguration took place on Friday at the judiciary headquarters in Lokoja, marking the commencement of the first quarterly High Court appeal session for 2025. The panels immediately began hearing appeals from lower courts across the state.

Despite limited resources and the ongoing fasting periods observed by both Muslim and Christian faithful, Justice Majebi emphasized the judiciary’s commitment to maintaining its quarterly appeal sittings. He commended the sacrifices made by judges to ensure the uninterrupted dispensation of justice.

Speaking on the need for professionalism and ethical conduct in the legal profession, Justice Majebi stressed the importance of a harmonious working relationship between the Bench and the Bar. He assured lawyers that the judiciary remains committed to providing an enabling environment for effective adjudication and addressing legitimate complaints.

However, the Chief Judge expressed concern over the increasing number of frivolous requests for case transfers by litigants, often initiated by lawyers. He warned that such practices undermine the integrity of the legal profession.

“The number of requests for transfer of cases is becoming excessive, and many of them lack merit. Lawyers should not be drafting complaints for litigants to sign against judges or court proceedings,” he stated.

Justice Majebi urged lawyers to guide their clients appropriately, emphasizing that judicial rulings should not be a basis for seeking judge replacements. He cited instances where multiple rulings went against a party, only for the final judgment to be in their favor, underscoring that justice must be allowed to take its course.

Reaffirming the judiciary’s commitment to fairness and efficiency, he disclosed that several non-functional courts in the state have been renovated and are now fully operational. He assured stakeholders that the judiciary remains dedicated to timely and impartial justice delivery.

“The judiciary of Kogi State is determined to dispense justice fairly and within time,” he affirmed.
