The Chief Judge of Kogi State, Hon. Justice Josiah Majebi, has inaugurated a high-powered committee to review the state’s High Court (Civil Procedure) Rules, coinciding with the commencement of a one-week Easter break for judges of the court.

The inauguration ceremony took place at the state’s judiciary headquarters in Lokoja. The committee is chaired by Hon. Justice Abdul Awulu, with Hon. Justice Moses Gwatana serving as Vice Chairman.

Speaking on the necessity of the review, Justice Majebi noted that the current rules guiding High Court procedures were enacted 19 years ago under the leadership of the pioneer Chief Judge of the state, Hon. Justice Umaru Eri. He credited the initial rules with introducing “remarkable innovations into the civil litigation landscape” of Kogi State.

“However, as with most legal systems, there is always room for further innovations, modifications, and improvements aimed at achieving a better degree of conformity with contemporary practices,” he added.

Justice Majebi emphasized that the review was a timely reform needed to align the administration of justice in the state with evolving technological advancements, enhancing the civil litigation process to meet modern-day standards.

“These reforms will prioritize technology integration, procedural efficiency, and case management flexibility—fostering a more robust and accessible justice system,” he stated.

He expressed confidence in the committee’s ability to deliver on their mandate, expressing hope that they would present a comprehensive set of revised rules within the one-month timeline. The Chief Judge also lauded the credibility, integrity, and legal expertise of the selected members.

“You have been carefully selected to review the Kogi State High Court (Civil Procedure) Rules, 2006. Your appointment is a reflection of your sterling records of progressive sacrifice and commitment to the legal profession and the administration of justice,” he said.

Justice Majebi also urged the committee to be mindful of the current economic realities in Nigeria while carrying out their review.

In his acceptance speech on behalf of the committee, Chairman Hon. Justice Abdul Awulu thanked the Chief Judge for the confidence reposed in them and pledged the committee’s full commitment to delivering on the important assignment.
