Nigerian economist and former presidential candidate, Kingsley Moghalu, has weighed in on the ongoing controversy surrounding British politician of Nigerian descent, Kemi Badenoch.

Badenoch’s rise in British politics and her recent comments distancing herself from her Nigerian roots have sparked debates within Nigerian circles.

According to Moghalu in a statement on Sunday via X, the debate over Badenoch’s identity and her relationship with Nigeria is ultimately inconsequential to the country’s development.

He said, “Even if she were to become the UK Prime Minister tomorrow morning, it would have absolutely ZERO implications (or benefits even) for Nigeria and Nigerians.”

Badenoch, who serves as a Member of Parliament of the United Kingdom, has faced criticism for comments perceived as distancing herself from Nigeria, where she was born.

While some Nigerians have expressed pride in her achievements, others have questioned whether her success holds any tangible meaning for Nigeria’s socio-political and economic realities.

Moghalu added that the focus should be back on Nigeria’s internal issues, urging Nigerians to channel their energies into solving the nation’s myriad problems.

“So why all the fuss? Nigerian leaders and Nigerians should fix Nigeria’s problems. “Claiming” Kemi or her “denying” Nigeria won’t solve them,” he said.

Earlier, Badenoch defended her remarks about Nigeria following criticism from the vice president, Kashim Shettima, who accused her of disrespecting her heritage.

The Conservative Party leader, who was born in the UK and spent much of her youth in Nigeria, spoke about living with fear and instability in a country she describes as plagued by corruption.
