In an interview with Punch News, Mr. Kashopefoluwa Balogun, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), urged the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) to publish the names of judges for public comment before their appointment, similar to the process used for appointing SANs.

Balogun emphasized the importance of transparency and public input in the appointment of judges, stating, “Just as they do for senior advocates, the names of potential judges should be published for comments. Their suitability, morally and ethically, should be commented upon. They do it for senior advocates, why not for judges?”

The senior advocate also addressed concerns about the number of lawyers conferred with the SAN rank, arguing that the quality of SANs has not diminished despite the increasing numbers. He noted that the requirements for becoming a SAN have become more rigorous over the years, and the percentage of successful applicants remains low compared to the total number of practicing lawyers in Nigeria.

Balogun further called for reforms in the judiciary, urging the CJN to prioritize areas such as the modernization of filing and recording systems, the integration of information technology, and the implementation of effective case management. He also advocated for stiffer penalties for corruption among lawyers, judges, and other stakeholders in the administration of justice.

Addressing the issue of court congestion, Balogun highlighted the need to restrict the subject matters that can be taken to the Supreme Court, as the current system has led to an overburdened and overworked apex court. He called for constitutional amendments by the National Assembly and the executive to define the number of matters that can be heard by the Supreme Court.
