The Kano State Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has taken disciplinary action against several magistrates and court officials found guilty of misconduct, reaffirming its zero-tolerance stance on indiscipline within the judiciary.

The resolutions were announced in a statement issued on Thursday by Baba Jibo-Ibrahim, spokesperson for the Kano State Judiciary, following the JSC’s meeting held on Wednesday.

Among those sanctioned is Alkali Mustapha Kiru, a Kadi of the Sharia Court, who was recalled for one year after issuing a writ of possession in a disputed farmland case that had been closed due to the plaintiff’s failure to bring a witness. The commission said Kiru violated fair hearing principles and had also imprisoned the petitioner off-record for three weeks for challenging the issuance of the writ.

The JSC also issued a warning to Alkali Ahmad, following findings by the Judiciary Public Complaints Committee (JPCC) that he was negligent in handling a criminal case, failing to adhere to due procedures, potentially causing a miscarriage of justice.

Senior Magistrate Sakina Aminu received a warning letter for acting contrary to the express directives of the Chief Judge. She was also cautioned to maintain professional relationships with state counsels and to comply with a circular banning police prosecutors from handling matters in her court.

In another disciplinary move, Court Registrar Salisu Sule was demoted by one grade level following four complaints involving insults, intimidation, and abuse of office. The JPCC found that he repeatedly used the judiciary’s name to harass and intimidate members of the public. A previous warning letter had been issued to him in December 2024.

However, two magistrates, Mustapha Sa’ad-Datti and Rabi Abdulkadir, were cleared to resume judicial duties after a review of their cases. They were reminded to uphold the highest standards of integrity, diligence, and professionalism.

The Commission also directed Ahmad Danmaraya, a principal registrar attached to the High Court headquarters in Kano, to proceed on compulsory retirement for acts of gross misconduct. According to the JPCC, Danmaraya was found guilty of forging an affidavit, affixing a fake high court stamp and seal, and inscribing a false receipt number, despite not being a commissioner for oaths.
