The Kano State House of Assembly has passed a bill seeking to regulate private school fees and prevent arbitrary tuition increases across the state.

The bill, known as the Kano State Private and Voluntary Institutions Board (Amendment) Bill 2026, was passed after its third reading during plenary and now awaits the assent of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.

Under the proposed law, private schools will be required to consult Parent-Teacher Associations before increasing school fees, while any approved increase must not exceed 10 per cent.

The bill also prohibits private schools from charging students more than 10 per cent above the official registration fees fixed by external examination bodies such as WAEC, NECO and NABTEB.

As part of the amendment, statutory charges payable by private schools to the Private and Voluntary Institutions Board have been reduced from 15 per cent to five per cent.

The bill further provides that the position of Executive Secretary of the Board must be occupied by a retired or seasoned educationist who has attained at least Grade Level 14 in the public service.

According to the Assembly, the provisions are aimed at strengthening oversight, protecting parents from excessive charges, streamlining the administration of private education and improving educational standards across Kano State.

Once signed into law by the governor, the amendment is expected to give the state stronger regulatory control over private and voluntary institutions, particularly in relation to tuition increases, examination fees and administrative compliance.
