The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Hon. Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, announced the appointment of Hon. Justice Mary Peter Odili, JSC (rtd) as a member of the National Judicial Council (NJC) during a send-off dinner hosted by the Body of Benchers on Thursday night. The event was held in honor of Justice Odili, who recently concluded her tenure as Chair of the Body.
The appointment, effective from April 1, 2024, is in accordance with Paragraph 20 of Part One of the Third Schedule to the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended. The National Judicial Council comprises various members, including the Chief Justice of Nigeria as the Chairman, the next most senior Justice of the Supreme Court as the Deputy Chairman, and the President of the Court of Appeal, among others.
Justice Mary Peter Odili’s appointment falls under the category of “five retired Justices selected by the Chief Justice of Nigeria from the Supreme Court or Court of Appeal.” Her selection is a testament to her distinguished career and contributions to the Nigerian judiciary.
