* Joshua suffers humiliating defeat on his US debut after being knocked down four times to leave him out of the heavyweight championship picture

Anthony Joshua suffered a humiliating defeat to lose his three world titles to huge overwhelming underdog Andy Ruiz Jr, with the Briton knocked down four times in one of heavyweight boxing’s biggest upsets.

The 29-year-old Briton was confident of making a successful debut in the United States, with a switch of opponent following Jarrell Miller’s failed drugs test resulting in Ruiz stepping in at just five-and-a-half weeks’ notice to take the biggest fight of his career.

And while the first two rounds begun in a cagey affair, Joshua looked to be cruising to victory when he landed a thunderous combination to the Mexican-American that sent him crashing to the canvas in the third round.

However, the unthinkable happened.

Ruiz not only saw out the round, but sent Joshua down twice to move ahead on the scorecards and in truth the Olympic gold medallist was lucky to see it out to the bell.

Despite recovering to make it through rounds four, five and six with relative comfort, the seventh proved to be the round that will go down in history. Ruiz rocked Joshua again and the Watford native was unable to prevent himself from crashing to the canvas for the third time.

Having made the count again, Joshua was dropped for a fourth time, and although he was back on his feet to avoid the 10-count, referee Mike Griffin waved off the contest when Joshua failed to walk towards him as he was clearly left in a daze.
