The Commissioner, Mrs Uzamat Akinbile-Yussuf, told journalists yesterday that since the school was located in the state and the alleged act was perpetrated in the state, the school cannot stop it from investigating the matter. She said: “Although Queens College is a federal school, it is located in the state. The state has encountered uncooperative attitude of the school authorities and call for the temporary removal of those concerned in the issue, pending the outcome of the investigation. “We, therefore, implore the Federal Ministry of Education to direct officials of the school to cooperate with state’s social workers in the best interest of the children. The state will not stand by and watch, but will always act in accordance with the Child Rights Act.” Released Meanwhile, after more than 72 hours in Police custody, the embattled teacher, Mr. Olaseni Osifala, regained freedom, yesterday. Osifala, who had been held at the Police Headquarters, Ikeja, since Tuesday afternoon, was allegedly released yesterday after a former Lagos State Deputy Governor intervened. The politician was said to have been contacted for intervention by the school management. It will be recalled that on Monday, March 21, the management of Queens College threw its weight behind the accused teacher, after the story which was published on a blog generated public interests, as many called for the head of the teacher, while others supported the teacher. Apart from students, workers and residents demonstrated with placards in solidarity with the accused teacher, whom they claimed was a man of proven integrity. The school’s principal, Lami Amodu, also released a statement, vouching for the integrity of Olaseni. In the statement, she said the allegation was an attempt to ridicule, not just Olaseni, but the hard-earned reputation of Queens College. Last Tuesday, Lagos Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, invited the Principal and the accused teacher for questioning. Thereafter, Olaseni was detained, while the Minister of State for Education, Professor Anthony Anwukah, constituted a panel to investigate the allegations. In a statement, Mr. Ben Bem Goong, Director of Press, Federal Ministry of Education, said the minister was worried over the allegation.]]>
