The Administrator of the National Judicial Institute, Justice Babatunde Adejumo, has warned court registrars, bailiffs and other judicial support staff against engaging in practices capable of undermining the integrity of the judiciary, stressing that anyone found culpable of leaking judgments, accepting bribes or committing other forms of misconduct would face legal consequences.

Adejumo gave the warning while declaring open a case management workshop organised by the NJI for court personnel involved in filing processes, registry operations and the service of court processes.
He said the effectiveness and credibility of the justice system depended not only on the decisions delivered by judges but also on the professionalism, discipline and integrity of the support staff responsible for the administrative and procedural aspects of court proceedings.
According to him, every motion filed, document received, case scheduled, record maintained, oath administered and court process served contributes directly to the proper functioning and public perception of the judicial system.
Adejumo therefore cautioned judicial workers against conduct that could bring the judiciary into disrepute, warning that practices such as leaking judgments, demanding or receiving bribes and other unethical acts would not be tolerated.
He described effective case management as one of the defining benchmarks of a functional judicial system, noting that modern courts were increasingly expected to deliver legally sound decisions within reasonable timeframes and through procedures that are transparent, efficient and responsive to the needs of court users.
The NJI Administrator said achieving those objectives required effective coordination between judicial officers and the personnel responsible for the administrative and procedural management of cases.
He explained that delays, poor record keeping, ineffective service of processes and weaknesses in registry operations could undermine justice delivery even where judicial officers were committed to deciding cases fairly and efficiently.
Adejumo said the workshop was designed to deepen the knowledge of participants on contemporary case management practices and strengthen their capacity to support the effective administration of justice.
According to him, the programme would cover case flow management, records administration, filing procedures, service of court processes, registry operations and the increasing integration of technology into court administration.
He added that participants would also receive training on professional ethics and strategies for improving the efficiency of court operations.
Adejumo commended the Board of Governors of the NJI for recognising that judicial excellence could not be achieved without a knowledgeable, competent and professionally disciplined workforce.
He particularly praised the Chief Justice of Nigeria and Chairman of the NJI Board of Governors, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, for her commitment to judicial reform, institutional strengthening and capacity development within the judiciary.
The NJI Administrator also acknowledged the Chairman of the Board’s Education Committee, Justice John Inyang Okoro, for his guidance and support for the Institute’s training programmes.
He further thanked heads of courts and facilitators participating in the workshop for supporting the NJI’s efforts to improve the capacity and professional standards of judicial personnel across the country.
Adejumo urged participants to apply the knowledge acquired from the programme in their respective courts, stressing that professionalism among judicial support staff remained critical to reducing delays, strengthening public confidence and preserving the integrity of Nigeria’s justice system.
