The Chief Judge of the Federal Capital Territory High Court, Justice Husseini Baba-Yusuf, has said the welfare of judicial officers is not a privilege but an institutional necessity required for stability, productivity, security and the preservation of judicial dignity.

Justice Baba-Yusuf stated this on Wednesday in Abuja during the inauguration of the newly completed 20-unit judges’ quarters in the Federal Capital Territory.

The project, which was initiated under the administration of the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, forms part of ongoing infrastructural interventions aimed at strengthening the judiciary in the nation’s capital.

Speaking at the event, the FCT Chief Judge said the housing project, which was flagged off less than two years ago, was completed in record time and represented a strategic investment in the administration of justice.

He said the provision of decent residential accommodation for judges would strengthen democratic institutions by supporting judicial independence, reducing anxieties linked to poor living conditions and enabling judicial officers to perform their constitutional duties with courage, impartiality and fidelity to the rule of law.

“What started as a vision, nurtured and driven by the relentless dedication of the Honourable Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has finally unfolded into something extraordinary,” he said.

“The welfare of judicial officers is not a privilege. It is an institutional necessity that promotes stability, enhances productivity, safeguards personal security and preserves the dignity that must accompany judicial office.

“The provision of these quarters is a significant contribution to judicial independence.

“Judicial officers require adequate infrastructure and dignified welfare arrangements to perform their adjudicative responsibilities efficiently, courageously and with complete fidelity to the rule of law.”

Justice Baba-Yusuf said the newly completed quarters reflect a deliberate effort to protect the dignity of judicial office and provide judges with the institutional support required to discharge their responsibilities effectively.

He also appealed to the FCT Minister to extend similar housing projects to judges of the FCT Sharia Court of Appeal and the Customary Court of Appeal.

The 20-unit judges’ quarters is part of a broader programme of judicial infrastructure development by the FCT Administration.

In June, President Bola Tinubu inaugurated a 10-unit Court of Appeal judges’ quarters in the Katampe District of Abuja.

Also in June, a new Abuja Division complex of the Court of Appeal located in the Dakibiyu area of the FCT was inaugurated.

The latest project further underscores the administration’s stated commitment to improving the working and living conditions of judicial officers as part of efforts to strengthen justice delivery in the Federal Capital Territory.
