*Says “If Akinboro Thinks He Can Become NBA President By Manufacturing Patently Corrupt Orders, He Is Mistaken”

A former Chairman of the Governing Council of the National Human Rights Commission, Professor Chidi Anselm Odinkalu, CGoF, has criticised an ex parte court order restraining the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) from recognising any presidential candidate other than the purported consensus candidate of Egbe Amofin O’odua.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, Odinkalu questioned the propriety of the order and challenged Aare Muyiwa Akinboro, SAN, the so-called consensus candidate, on the approach being used to secure the NBA presidency.

Odinkalu said Justice Yemi Saubana Adekunle of the High Court of Oyo State, who he believes was appointed in December 2024, has effectively concluded the voting for the 2026 NBA elections and announced the result through the ex parte order.

“Yemi Saubana Adekunle, who became a judge of the High Court of Oyo State, I believe, in Dec 2024, has concluded the voting for #NBADecides2026 & announced the result,” Odinkalu wrote.

He criticised the judge for restraining the entire NBA voting membership without giving them an opportunity to be heard.

“Ruling ex parte in an application brought by the Incorporated Trustees of Egbe Amofin two weeks ago, he restrained the entire world, including all the voting members of @NigBarAssoc whom he could not be bothered to hear from, from recognising any candidate for the presidency of @NigBarAssoc in 2026 except the ‘consensus’ candidate of #EgbeAmofin,” Odinkalu stated.

Odinkalu also questioned Akinboro’s strategy for emerging as NBA President.

“I am not sure how @MuyiwaAkinboro thinks this is how to go about winning the presidency of the NBA. If he wants to emerge by consensus, all he has to do is persuade the other candidates in the running to stand down for him,” he said.

Describing the court orders as “patently corrupt,” the former NHRC chairman also took a swipe at the judge’s competence.

“But if he thinks he can become president of the NBA by manufacturing these patently corrupt orders from a nobbled or neophyte judge who cannot distinguish between ‘save’ & ‘safe’, he is mistaken,” Odinkalu declared.

The statement follows an ex parte interim injunction granted by the High Court of Justice, Oyo State, sitting in the Ibadan Judicial Division, restraining the NBA, its officers, organs, committees, agents, servants, privies, and any person acting for or on their behalf from recognising, accepting, or processing the nomination of any candidate other than the consensus candidate presented by the Incorporated Trustees of Egbe Amofin O’odua for the 2026 NBA Presidential election.

The order, issued in Suit No. I/205/2026, Court No. 17, was signed by Hon. Justice Y. S. Adekunle on February 24, 2026, following a Motion Ex Parte brought by the claimant.

The case has been adjourned to March 10, 2026, for the hearing of the Motion on Notice for interlocutory injunction.
