A Senior Advocate of Nigeria and one of the Incorporated Trustees of Egbe Amofin O’odua, Funke Adekoya, SAN, has publicly disassociated herself from the suit filed by the organization seeking to compel the Nigerian Bar Association to recognize only the consensus candidate presented by the Ègbé for the office of NBA President.

In a statement reacting to the court order, Adekoya stated: “I am one of the Incorporated Trustees of the Ègbé. Speaking personally, I disassociate myself from this suit as I was never consulted before a decision was taken to institute a legal action in the name of the Ègbé.”

“If other trustees were consulted, they may so indicate. As an entity incorporated under CAMA, the Ègbé is bound by the rules of corporate governance, especially as it relates to the role and functions of incorporated trustees. Trustees are not nominal figures,” she stated.

The Senior Advocate added: “I believe the time has come for me to reconsider my Trusteeship position with the Ègbé.”

The statement comes following an ex parte interim injunction granted by the High Court of Justice, Oyo State of Nigeria, sitting in the Ibadan Judicial Division, restraining the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), its officers, organs, committees, agents, servants, privies, and any person acting for or on their behalf from recognising, accepting, or processing the nomination of any candidate other than the consensus candidate presented by the Incorporated Trustees of Egbe Amofin O’odua for the office of the President of the Nigerian Bar Association in the forthcoming 2026 NBA General Election.

Defendants named in the suit include the Incorporated Trustees of the NBA, NBA President Mazi Afam Josiah Osigwe, SAN, the Body of Benchers, the General Council of the Bar, the Attorney-General of the Federation, and Aham Ejelam, SAN, Chairman of the NBA Electoral Committee.

The ex parte motion was supported by a 40-paragraph affidavit deposed by Adetunji Osho, SAN, and filed by Tunji Ogunrinde, SAN, alongside a team of senior legal practitioners including J. S. Okutepa, SAN, Chief Yomi Aliyu, SAN, Kazeem A. Gbadamosi, SAN, Soji Olowolafe, SAN, Seun Ajayi, SAN, R. O. Balogun, SAN, Ibrahim Mukhtar, Esq., Taiwo Adedeji, Esq., Tope Alabi, Esq., and Ejuro Uruejoma, Esq.

Funke Adekoya’s public disassociation raises questions over the internal decision-making of the Egbe Amofin O’odua and highlights the need for proper corporate governance in initiating legal actions.

The court adjourned the matter to 10 March 2026 for the hearing of the Motion on Notice for interlocutory injunction. The interim order remains in force pending the determination of the motion.
