Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, has strongly condemned the recent comments by former United States President Donald Trump, who described Nigeria as a “disgraced country” while threatening possible U.S. military action over alleged killings of Christians.

Jibrin’s reaction came amid mounting outrage from northern groups, including the Northern Elders’ Forum (NEF) and the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), who jointly denounced Trump’s remarks as an attack on Nigeria’s sovereignty and an attempt to stoke religious tension.
In a viral video trending on Friday, Jibrin faulted Trump’s comments, calling them “un-American” and a “violation of international law.”
“But for the President of the United States to come in and say, ‘Oh, you are doing this and we are going to attack you, and Nigeria is a disgraced country’ this is quite unacceptable,” he said.
He urged Trump to retract his statement and apologise, adding that diplomatic decency and international law must be respected.
“It’s against international law. Whatever you feel about our country, follow the legal route. Go to the United Nations, get a resolution there. To bypass that route is unacceptable it’s un-American,” Jibrin stated.
The Deputy Senate President insisted that Nigeria would not be intimidated by Trump’s threats, saying, “We are not scared of telling Trump the truth. If he were here, I would tell him he has gone against international law.”
Similarly, NEF spokesperson, Prof. Abubakar Jiddere, warned that northern leaders would not tolerate external interference in Nigeria’s affairs under any guise.
“Nigeria is not an appendage of America. Donald Trump is violating international treaties of the United Nations on non-interference. We in the North will not tolerate that,” Jiddere said.
He accused Washington of hiding economic motives behind its humanitarian rhetoric, citing Iraq, Libya, Sudan, and Afghanistan as examples of countries destabilised by U.S. intervention.
Jiddere dismissed the claim of Christian genocide as “a false narrative aimed at destabilising the country,” insisting that Nigeria remained capable of addressing its internal challenges.
MACBAN also reacted, condemning the U.S. House of Representatives’ resolution calling for sanctions against the group.
Describing the allegations as “baseless and malicious,” the association’s National President, Alhaji Baba Othman-Ngelzarma, told Saturday PUNCH that Miyetti Allah was a legitimate and law-abiding body with no ties to terrorism.
“This is a very serious allegation coming from the U.S. Congress. We are surprised to be included in such an allegation,” he said, adding that the group was compiling documents to defend its position.
Meanwhile, the Arewa Youth Consultative Council (AYCC) argued that Trump’s threat was driven by economic interests rather than concerns for religious freedom.
Its National President, Zaid Ayuba Ayuba, said the U.S. was acting to protect its strategic interests in Nigeria’s natural resources and global alliances.
“This threat must have something to do with America’s interest in Nigerian natural resources and our growing relationship with other powers,” Ayuba stated.
He warned that any U.S. invasion would only bring instability and unnecessary suffering, saying, “Once they invade a country, they never leave until they get what they want — and it’s the ordinary people who suffer most.”
