Muhammad Al-Mahdi Isa, a newly called Nigerian lawyer, has issued a formal disclaimer regarding a viral photo showing him wearing a silk gown an attire traditionally reserved for Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SAN).

The photo, which circulated widely on social media, was mistaken by many as being taken during his Call to Bar ceremony, sparking controversy and debate within the legal community about the appropriateness of the attire.

In his statement, Isa clarified that the picture was actually taken in 2023 during an event organised by the Ahmadu Bello University Students Representative Council-Court (ABUSRC-COURT), where he served as Secretary of the organising committee. He emphasized that the image was never intended to represent his Call to Bar and that the publication of the photo was done without his consent or approval.

Isa appealed to his colleagues and the public to understand the situation and expressed regret for any inconvenience caused by the misunderstanding. He urged media outlets to publish his disclaimer to set the record straight.

This incident comes against the backdrop of ongoing discussions about professionalism and dress code adherence in Nigeria’s legal profession, especially after the viral image raised concerns over compliance with Rule 45(2)(a) of the Rules of Professional Conduct, which mandates respectful and sober attire by lawyers.

Isa’s clarification seeks to restore his professional image and quell misunderstandings stirred by the viral photo.
