The Zamfara State Police Command has confirmed the abduction of seven students of the Federal Polytechnic, Kaura Namoda, by suspected bandits.

The students were abducted on Tuesday during an attack on their residence in the Low-Cost area of Kaura Namoda town.

Spokesperson of the command, Yazid Abubakar, confirmed the incident, saying one of the abducted students later escaped, while six others remain in captivity.

According to him, the attack did not take place inside the school premises, which he said had already been fortified with adequate security personnel.

“The school premises have been fortified with adequate security personnel, making it extremely difficult for bandits to penetrate,” Abubakar said.

He explained that preliminary findings showed that the students were abducted after one of them stepped outside during the night and inadvertently left the door open.

“One of the students went outside during the night, claiming he wanted to urinate. In the process, he left the door open. Coincidentally, bandits passing through the area entered the house and abducted the students,” he said.

The police spokesperson said operatives of the command’s Violent Crime Response Unit had joined forces with troops of Operation Fansan Yamma to track down the abductors and secure the release of the remaining victims.

The latest abduction adds to growing concerns over renewed violent attacks across the country.

Earlier on Wednesday, gunmen kidnapped Olaide John-Paul, sister of former Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, alongside her twin sons, Peter and Paul, in Ibadan, Oyo State.

Also on Sunday, four persons were killed when gunmen attacked the convoy of Ben Nwankwo, Chief of Staff to Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo.

The Zamfara incident has further heightened fears over the safety of students and residents in communities affected by banditry, despite ongoing security operations in the North-West.
