The Middle East edged closer to full-scale conflict Monday after Iran’s military launched missile strikes at the U.S.-operated Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, its largest military installation in the region, and at American positions in Iraq. The escalation follows heavy Israeli bombardments on Iran’s nuclear facilities and symbolic regime targets.

Qatar confirmed that one of the missiles was intercepted with no casualties recorded, even as neighboring Gulf states—Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates—swiftly shut down their airspace amid growing security concerns. Explosions were heard across Doha, lighting up the night sky as missile interceptors engaged incoming projectiles.

According to Qatar’s foreign ministry, the closure of its airspace is a “precautionary measure based on developments in the region” and is being closely coordinated with international partners.

The United States Embassy in Qatar issued an emergency advisory, urging all American citizens to shelter in place, citing the risk of further attacks. Similar warnings were issued by the UK and Canada, referencing the U.S. alert.

Meanwhile, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in his first statement since the crisis deepened, did not directly mention the United States but accused Israel of making a “grave mistake” and said the country “is being punished right now.”

Israel has continued its strikes inside Iran, reportedly targeting not only nuclear sites but also regime symbols like a notorious prison housing political detainees. According to Israeli officials, the goal is to signal vulnerability at the heart of Iran’s regime.

The United Nations’ atomic agency chief stated that the U.S. strikes on Iran’s Fordow enrichment site caused “very significant damage.” Israel followed up with additional strikes targeting entry routes into the Fordow facility.

Iran’s military command warned that the United States’ involvement in the attacks would bring “serious, unpredictable consequences” and vowed retaliation if further provocations occur.

As military exchanges intensify, global powers including those in Europe have urged restraint. However, U.S. President Donald Trump maintained a hardline stance, reiterating his conditions for any peace deal and refusing to rule out support for regime change in Iran.

The Iranian regime now faces a critical choice: escalate a conflict against two militarily superior foes—Israel and the United States—or return to nuclear negotiations that would likely require concessions on its uranium enrichment program and ballistic missile capabilities, both seen as core to Iran’s sovereignty.
