Tensions between Iran and Israel escalated Tuesday morning, casting doubt over a fragile ceasefire brokered by U.S. President Donald Trump and Qatar to end the 12-day conflict between the regional adversaries.

Iran’s armed forces accused Israel of launching fresh attacks on Iranian territory, stating that the Israeli military conducted three waves of strikes up until 9:00 am local time (0530 GMT). “The Zionist regime launched three waves of attacks on sites in Iranian territory,” said a spokesperson for the Iranian Armed Forces Command on state television, without disclosing the specific targets or casualties.

Just hours earlier, Trump had declared what he called a “Complete and Total CEASEFIRE” between Israel and Iran, urging both sides to honor the terms of the agreement and celebrating it as a diplomatic victory. “PLEASE DO NOT VIOLATE IT!” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

However, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz swiftly accused Iran of breaching the ceasefire by firing missiles into Israeli airspace. “Iran has completely violated the ceasefire,” Katz said, announcing that he had instructed the military to carry out “intense strikes against regime targets in the heart of Tehran.”

Iran, however, denied launching any missiles following the truce declaration. State-run media in Tehran described Israel’s claims as “baseless,” and the Supreme National Security Council issued a stern warning: “Any further aggression will be met with a decisive, firm, and timely response.”

Earlier statements by Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi hinted at a conditional de-escalation. He said that Iran would halt military operations if Israel ceased its attacks by 4:00 am Tehran time. “If Israel stops its illegal aggression against the Iranian people, Iran has no intention of continuing its response,” Araqchi posted on X (formerly Twitter), adding that the final decision on Iran’s actions was pending.

Meanwhile, BBC Persian reported that the overnight Israeli strikes on Tehran were among the most intense since hostilities began, killing at least four people in Israel. Iran’s retaliatory missile barrage on a U.S. airbase — reportedly intercepted — followed a weekend of coordinated U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iranian nuclear infrastructure.

Although Iran maintains it is not pursuing nuclear weapons, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei recently stated, “If we wanted to [develop nuclear weapons], world leaders wouldn’t be able to stop us.”

The latest developments have thrown the Trump-brokered ceasefire into question, with both sides trading blame and preparing for further escalation. As threats intensify, hopes for sustained peace in the region remain tenuous.
