Fighting between Israel and Iran entered its ninth day on Saturday, with multiple new strikes, international arrests, and growing fears of regional spillover.

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) launched a massive aerial assault on Iran’s southwestern Mahvaz region, using 30 fighter jets to deliver over 50 munitions targeting military infrastructure, including a missile launcher storage site. The IDF stated the strikes were “to intensify attacks on the Iranian regime’s military capabilities.”

Meanwhile, the UN nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), confirmed an Israeli strike on a centrifuge workshop at Iran’s Isfahan nuclear site. IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi noted the absence of nuclear material at the site but warned of a “sharp degradation in nuclear safety and security in Iran.”

Iranian media reported the complete destruction of the 115 Hoveyzeh emergency centre in Khuzestan Province. Although no casualties were reported, the attack has heightened tensions. Elsewhere, Iran confirmed the death of another nuclear scientist, Isar Tabatabei Ghomsheh, bringing the total number of nuclear scientists killed in the current conflict to ten. Ghomsheh and his wife were reportedly killed in their home late last week. Israel’s Channel 12 reported the operation targeting the scientists as “Operation Narnia.”

Iran’s health ministry says over 400 people have died and more than 3,000 have been injured in the nine days of Israeli strikes. Of the deceased, 54 were women and children, and five were healthcare workers. In Israel, 25 people have been killed and over 2,500 injured due to Iranian drone and missile attacks.

Israel claimed the assassination of senior Iranian commanders Saaed Izadi and Behnam Shahriyari in targeted strikes. Meanwhile, Cypriot authorities arrested a suspected Iranian spy of Azerbaijani descent near the RAF Akrotiri base, reportedly in possession of intelligence related to a planned terrorist attack. UK officials confirmed the arrest and are cooperating with Cyprus.

Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi group warned the United States it would resume attacks on American ships in the Red Sea if Washington joined Israeli operations against Iran. A ceasefire between the Houthis and the US had been in place since May.

Millions in Iran continue to face internet blackouts, further isolating the population. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, currently in Turkey, warned that any US involvement in the conflict would be “very, very dangerous.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu remains at the forefront of the offensive. Public support in Israel is strong, with 82% of Jewish Israelis backing the campaign, but analysts warn of the risks involved. “More and more Israeli officials are hinting at regime change,” BBC’s Hugo Bachega noted, adding, “The Middle East has a history of foreign interventions that promise freedom but result in chaos.”

BBC Verify released satellite comparisons confirming major structural damage at Iran’s Isfahan nuclear facility. Seven buildings have been flattened in a 0.3 sq km area. The IDF stated these were “centrifuge production facilities.” Previous attacks also targeted nuclear-related sites in Tehran and Karaj.

As the humanitarian toll rises and geopolitical risks grow, global attention is fixated on whether this wave of strikes will de-escalate—or spiral into wider war.
