The Kano State Police Command has invited NDC Chieftain Aminu Abdullahi Warkal for questioning over the alleged unlawful display of a firearm at a political gathering, warning that the conduct, if established, could violate the Firearms Act and threaten public peace.

The command confirmed that Warkal was already at its State Intelligence Department at the police headquarters in Bompai, Kano, when it issued its statement on Monday, October 5, 2026.

Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, said the invitation followed a directive from the Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, after officers discovered a circulating video during routine monitoring of social media.

“He is currently at the Command’s State Intelligence Department (SID) and investigation is in progress,” Kiyawa stated.

Warkal has been identified in reports as a Nigeria Democratic Congress politician seeking a seat in the Kano State House of Assembly. The footage allegedly showed him displaying what police described as a suspected pump-action rifle while surrounded by people at what appeared to be a political gathering.

According to the command, officers encountered the video during a routine cyber patrol conducted as part of its intelligence-led surveillance and security operations across the state.

The police said the footage prompted an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the alleged display. Its description of the weapon remained qualified, referring to it as a suspected pump-action rifle rather than announcing a completed forensic identification.

The statement also made the alleged breach of the Firearms Act conditional on the outcome of the investigation. It warned that an unlawful display of a firearm could cause fear, intimidate members of the public and undermine public peace and security. PRESS RELEASE NAIJA

On the invitation, the available statement establishes that Bakori directed Warkal to attend the command headquarters and that he had appeared before investigators by the time the announcement was made.

It does not indicate whether police contacted him by telephone, served a written invitation or used another means. No invitation letter or separate appointment fixing a later reporting date was reproduced in the statement reviewed.

The announcement therefore concerns an investigation already underway at the State Intelligence Department, rather than an outstanding invitation requiring Warkal to appear on a future date.

Bakori warned that the command would not tolerate lawlessness, thuggery or the display of weapons capable of threatening public peace, regardless of the political position or status of anyone involved.

The warning extended to political actors, their supporters and other stakeholders, whom he urged to conduct their activities peacefully and comply with the Electoral Act, the Firearms Act and other applicable laws.

“All political activities must be conducted in a manner that promotes peace, tolerance and respect for the rule of law,” the command stated.

The police reiterated their commitment to protecting lives and property and maintaining security across Kano before, during and after political activities.

The statement did not announce a criminal charge, disclose whether the suspected firearm had been recovered or provide details of any licence covering its possession. It also did not contain Warkal’s response to the allegation.

The circumstances surrounding the weapon’s possession and display remain subject to investigation.
