*Says Widow’s Abuse Is Common In The Nigerian Society
The former Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association, Abuja Branch, Mr. Desmond Yamah, has felicited with widows on the occasion of the International Widow’s Day.
In a statement made available to TheNigeriaLawyer, Yamah, who happens to be a candidate for the position of the NBA National General Secretary, urged the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) to fight for widows because widow’s abuse is prevalent in Nigeria
“being a widow is an extremely challenging experience that no widow should go through but for the ephemeral nature of life.
“the Nigerian Bar Association, like FIDA must champion the fight against widows’ abuses and disempowerment, which is common in our society on the demise of their husbands.” he said
He further called for abolition of the practice of treating widows as properties to be shared amongst relatives of the deceased
He said, “Denying widows the right of inheritance and in some occasions treating widows as properties to be shared amongst the relatives of their deceased husbands must be abolished within the parameters of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
“I join all widows in praying for the repose of the Souls of their deceased husbands.”
