What began as a routine selection decision has developed into fresh uncertainty over Cristiano Ronaldo’s international future, after the Portugal captain left the national team camp in Copenhagen and promised to explain the reasons behind his departure “in time.”

The 41-year-old confirmed on Wednesday that he had left the Portugal camp following discussions with Portuguese Football Federation President Pedro Proença, only hours after head coach Jorge Jesus publicly insisted there was no serious dispute between himself and the five-time Ballon d’Or winner.

Ronaldo wrote on Instagram that his decision came after the national team coach’s press conference and a conversation with the federation president.

“After the press conference of the national team and following a conversation with the president of the Portuguese Football Federation, I have decided to leave the national team training camp,” Ronaldo said.

“In time, I will tell all the Portuguese the truth about the reasons that motivated me to leave.”

He also wished his teammates well in their remaining matches.

The development followed several days of speculation about the relationship between Ronaldo and Jesus, who previously coached him at Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr.

Ronaldo had been included in Jesus’ 25-man squad for the current UEFA Nations League international window and started Portugal’s opening game against Wales.

He was, however, left on the bench throughout Portugal’s 2-1 victory over Norway in Oslo on Sunday. At the final whistle, Ronaldo headed directly towards the dressing room rather than joining his teammates as they acknowledged the travelling Portuguese supporters.

That moment fuelled reports that Ronaldo was unhappy about not being used, particularly because Jesus had previously indicated that the forward could be introduced during the match.

Speaking ahead of Portugal’s game against Denmark, Jesus acknowledged that Ronaldo would naturally have been disappointed after warming up and ultimately remaining an unused substitute, but rejected suggestions that there had been a confrontation.

“There was no incident whatsoever,” Jesus said.

“Any player — and I was a player myself — when you spend 20 or 30 minutes warming up and then don’t get on, no-one is happy about that.”

Jesus explained that he had informed Ronaldo before the Norway game that he would not start but could be introduced later.

“Afterwards, as coach, I decided not to bring him on. It’s nothing to make a fuss about,” he said.

The coach also dismissed reports that Ronaldo had refused to train with the squad.

According to Jesus, Ronaldo’s separate work earlier in the week was part of an individual programme involving mobility and strengthening exercises rather than an act of protest.

“He didn’t refuse. He’s going to train today,” Jesus told reporters.

“It’s impossible. Do you believe that? Not Cris.”

Jesus said he had spoken directly with Ronaldo following the speculation.

According to the coach, Ronaldo told him: “I’m here for you to decide. If you want me to play, I’ll play. If you want me to go to the stands, I’ll go.”

However, events changed shortly afterwards.

Ronaldo did not join the rest of the Portugal squad for the scheduled training session at Copenhagen’s Parken Stadium. Portuguese media published footage appearing to show him leaving the stadium alongside members of the national team staff.

The Portuguese Football Federation subsequently confirmed that he had not taken part in the session.

Jesus had also confirmed at his press conference that Ronaldo would not start against Denmark, saying Gonçalo Ramos would again be preferred in attack.

Ramos had scored the winning goal against Norway, and Jesus made clear that Ronaldo’s status as captain and Portugal’s record goalscorer would not automatically guarantee him playing time.

“If I need him, he’ll come on. If I don’t need him, he won’t,” Jesus said.

Hours later, Ronaldo announced that he was leaving camp.

The timing of the departure has inevitably raised questions about whether the issue goes beyond one selection decision.

The federation president, Pedro Proença, had travelled to Copenhagen amid the growing speculation, with Portuguese reports saying he intended to speak with both Ronaldo and Jesus before the Denmark match.

Ronaldo has not publicly said that he is retiring from international football.

Reports in Portugal have suggested that retirement may now be under consideration, but the player’s own statement was limited to confirming that he had left the camp and would later explain why.

That distinction is significant because Ronaldo had already considered ending his Portugal career after the 2026 World Cup before ultimately deciding to continue.

He has spoken openly about his desire to keep playing while pursuing the extraordinary milestone of 1,000 career goals.

For Portugal, Ronaldo’s departure comes at an important stage of the Nations League campaign.

Jesus’ side beat Wales 1-0 before defeating Norway 2-1 and now face Denmark without their long-time captain. Portugal are also due to meet Norway again in their following fixture.

Ronaldo remains Portugal’s most capped player and record scorer, with 234 international appearances and 146 goals, making any uncertainty about his future particularly significant for the national team.

The episode also represents an early test for Jesus, who has begun reshaping the national team while managing the role of its most famous player.

His position has remained that selection decisions will be based on what he believes the team requires in each game, irrespective of reputation.

For Ronaldo, however, his decision to leave before the international window was completed  accompanied by his promise to eventually reveal “the truth”  means the full explanation for his departure has yet to come from the player himself.
