Ikpeazu, who spoke Tuesday, at the inauguration of the Abia State Justice Sector Reform Team, at the Aguiyi Ironsi Conference Center Umuahia, saidwith the inauguration of the reform team “we are in the threshold of a better tomorrow in the justice sector in Abia state.” Represented by the Secretary to the State Government, SSG, Dr. Eme Okoro, Governor Ikpeazu lauded the British Council for partnering with Federal Government to bring the necessary reforms in the justice sector. “As a product of equity, fairness and justice, we are partners in progress in these reforms, because justice delayed, is justice denied”, Ikpeazu said. In his address, the Deputy National Programme Manager, British Council, Mr. Godwin Odo said “it is our expectation that all of us will work together to implement the policies that will help the justice sector grow. We are to ensure that the challenges within the justice sector are resolved”. In his remarks at the inaugural workshop, the Attorney General of the State and Commissioner for Justice, Barrister Umeh Kalu, SAN, noted that “much has been said about the delay in the justice sector; I am happy that we are here trying to resolve the delay in the justice sector. This reform retreat will help speed up delivery of justice in the state and help the sector perform very well. “We have difficulties, but we have fixed some of them to ensure that things get better and that justice and trials are sped up. The summary of our gathering is to discuss how to give better services to our people in terms of justice delivery”, Kalu further said. In his speech, the Acting Chief Justice of the State, Justice Obisike Orji, expressed happiness over the programme, saying that it would go a long way in ensuring speedy deliverance of justice. “What we are doing today is a critical aspect of justice in Nigeria. I know there are problems which include inconclusive investigation and difficulty in reaching out to witnesses by the staff of the ministry of justice but all hands being on deck, we will resolve them”. He commended the Attorney General of Abia state for keying into the reform processes and urged all stakeholders to support the justice reform team to ensure they carry out their work successfully. In his remarks, the Speaker, Abia State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Chikwendu Kalu, said he was excited over the programme because “we are in the process of making sure Abia State moves forward and I want to assure you that we will continue to support outright reforms in the justice sector.”]]>
