The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has responded to recent allegations made by the Governor of Rivers State, His Excellency Siminalayi Fubara, against the Office of the Inspector-General of Police and the NPF.
In an official statement, the NPF clarified its position and addressed the Governor’s claims.
According to the statement, a subsisting Federal High Court order currently bars the NPF from participating in the Rivers State elections. This order was duly served on both the NPF and the Rivers State Government. In compliance with the court order, the Inspector-General of Police instructed the Commissioner of Police in Rivers State to refrain from any direct involvement in the election process.
However, on the evening of October 3, 2024, the Commissioner of Police received reports of police officers from the Rivers State Government House being deployed to the office of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RIEC) to aid in the conduct of the election. Upon receiving this information, the Inspector-General of Police authorized the Commissioner to withdraw the officers from the Government House and replace them with officers from the Command Operations Department. The deployed officers were tasked with providing overnight security for the RIEC office to prevent any potential attacks on the facility.
The NPF also noted that prior to this incident, there had been a series of security breaches in the state due to various court orders, counter orders, and reactions from supporters of different political parties. The decision to secure the RIEC office overnight was deemed professional and was supported by the Inspector-General of Police, based on intelligence available to the State Command.
The NPF expressed shock at the Governor’s actions, which included storming the RIEC office at night, wrongly accusing the police of misconduct, and using inappropriate language to describe the Inspector-General of Police. The NPF strongly condemned the Governor’s unwarranted outburst and the false accusations levied against the Inspector-General and the entire police force. The NPF advised the Governor to exercise caution and decency in the pursuit of individual political goals.
The statement emphasized that threatening violence and destruction over a Local Government election is unacceptable. The NPF reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property and announced that it will work with other security agencies in Rivers State to maintain law and order. To this end, the Inspector-General of Police has ordered increased deployment of security personnel throughout the state. Citizens of Rivers State are advised to continue with their lawful activities.
The statement was issued by ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Force Public Relations Officer, on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police, from the Force Headquarters in Abuja on October 4, 2024.
