The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, on Tuesday dismissed social media reports suggesting a promotion scandal within the Nigeria Police Force.

Speaking at Force Headquarters in Abuja during the decoration of 19 newly promoted senior officers, Egbetokun described the allegations as the work of “mischief makers” intent on tarnishing the image of the Force.

The promotions included a Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Dan-Kwara; four Assistant Inspectors-General of Police; and 11 Commissioners of Police.

The IGP emphasized that all promotions under his administration followed due process, were merit-based, and conducted in strict accordance with established standards.

“There is no promotion scandal in the Nigeria Police Force. What we have is a system that rewards diligence, professionalism, and proven capacity,” he said.

“Our commitment to fairness and merit remains unwavering. Promotions today are guided solely by competence, performance, and discipline. There is no place for nepotism or sentiment,” Egbetokun added.

The IGP congratulated the newly promoted officers and urged them to view their elevation as a call to greater responsibility, accountability, and ethical leadership. He also encouraged them to adapt to modern security challenges and embrace innovation in crime prevention.
