A video of a Nigerian lawyer has gone viral, in which he urged litigants to refrain from directing spiritual attacks, or “juju,” at opposing lawyers during ongoing court cases.

In the clip, which TheNigeriaLawyer could not verify his name at the time of filing the report, the lawyer made an impassioned appeal to litigants who consult spiritualists during litigation.

The lawyer said, “If you have a problem with someone and the case is already in court, and you still want to report the matter to your ‘juju’, leave the opponent’s lawyer out of it. Stop attacking the lawyer spiritually; attack your opponent only. Lawyers are just doing their job.”

He continued, “If you have a problem with somebody and you are in court, if you go to your dibia or your juju, leave the lawyer out of it. Don’t be attacking the lawyer spiritually. The lawyer is just doing his job.”

The lawyer emphasised that litigants should direct their spiritual efforts at their actual opponents, not the legal representatives.

"If He's Not Paying The Lawyer, The Lawyer Would Not Be There" — Nigerian Lawyer Appeals To Litigants Consulting Spiritualists

♬ original sound – TheNigeriaLawyer

“Attack the person that you are having problems with in court. He’s the one paying the lawyer. If he’s not paying the lawyer, the lawyer would not be there. Why are you attacking lawyers spiritually? Please now,” he said, sighing in apparent frustration.

He highlighted that lawyers are professionals carrying out their ethical duties and should not be targeted through spiritual means simply because they are representing the opposing party.

The video has sparked widespread discussion online, with many viewers noting the prevalence of beliefs in consulting spiritualists to influence court outcomes in Nigeria.

The appeal reflects a unique intersection of legal practice and traditional beliefs that remains prevalent in parts of the country, where some litigants are believed to consult native doctors or spiritualists in attempts to influence the outcome of court cases.
