— As Turaki Faction Rejects Judgment, Heads To Apex Court

A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by former Minister of Special Duties, Tanimu Turaki, has rejected the judgment of the Court of Appeal which upheld the nullification of the party’s Ibadan National Convention and the suspension of some national officers, declaring that it will immediately challenge the ruling at the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

In a statement issued on Monday by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, the Turaki-led faction said the legal battle over the party’s internal leadership dispute was far from over, adding that its lawyers had been directed to urgently file an appeal before the apex court.

The group was reacting to a judgment delivered by a panel of the Court of Appeal presided over by Mohammed Ambi-Usi Danjuma, which upheld earlier rulings of the Federal High Court of Nigeria nullifying the PDP’s Ibadan National Convention.

The appellate court also affirmed the suspension of some party officers, including former National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu, and other affected officials, while upholding judgments earlier delivered by Justice James Omotosho and Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court, Abuja.

The court further dismissed an appeal challenging the interlocutory orders issued by Justice Inyang Ekwo Abdulmalik.

However, the Turaki faction said the operationalisation of the judgment could impose “untold hardship” on party members nationwide, noting that consultations were ongoing with critical organs of the party on the next line of action.

“The operationalisation of this judgment will, without fail, impose untold hardship on our members,” Ememobong said.

“To avert this, while we consult with critical organs of our party on the way forward, we have instructed our lawyers to immediately take the necessary legal steps to appeal to the Supreme Court, the apex court in the land, for a final determination of the matter.”

He expressed optimism that the apex court would swiftly resolve the dispute in the interest of democracy.

Ememobong also urged party members to remain united, assuring them that the legal dispute would soon be resolved.

“The battle to rescue our party from the hands of government agents masquerading as opposition leaders must be fought, and we are determined to do so and win,” the statement added.

Meanwhile, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has told the Turaki-led faction of the PDP that he and his allies are ready if they decide to go to the Supreme Court.

Wike made the statement on Monday after his faction of the PDP won nine appeals filed against them by the Makinde-backed Turaki faction.

Reacting, Wike said, “Today’s judgement is an opportunity for PDP to reconcile, but if they decide to go to the Supreme Court, it won’t augur well for the party.

“If they insist on going to the Supreme Court, we’ll be ready for them. We won all nine appeals against them today in court, and each comes with N2m cost totalling N18m against them.”

In another development, former National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Samuel Anyanwu, has debunked reports claiming that the Appeal Court upheld his suspension.

Online reports had purported that the court upheld the suspension of Anyanwu, the National Organising Secretary, Umaru Bature; the party’s National Legal Adviser, Kamaldeen Ajibade, SAN; and the Deputy National Legal Adviser, Okechukwu Osuoha.

However, addressing journalists after the Appeal Court ruled on the Ibadan convention, Anyanwu debunked the report, saying, “There was nothing like suspension. It was not before the court.”

Anyanwu also stated that the party is set for its national convention, noting that it will be held between March 29 and 30.

The development marks another twist in the lingering leadership crisis within the PDP, which has seen rival blocs within the party, including those aligned with former Rivers State governor Nyesom Wike, locked in a prolonged struggle over the control and direction of Nigeria’s main opposition party.

Meanwhile, the Tanimu Turaki-led faction is heading to the Supreme Court to challenge the Appeal Court ruling.
