The Institute of Chartered Mediators and Conciliators (ICMC) in partnership with GIZ, on Monday, began free ADR campaign for the members of Garki International Market Association, in Abuja. The campaign is to promote mediation as a way to resolve disputes in businesses, especially in markets.

The 3-day Mediation and Conciliation session is aimed at amicably resolving all kinds of disputes that members of the Market Association are facing.

The theme of the mediation week is tagged “Promoting Peaceful Co-Existence in Markets”.

The president of the ICMC, Dr, Agada Elachi, who declared the event open said the essence of Volunteer Mediation Scheme(VMS), is to provide Corporate Social Responsibility thereby giving back to society.

He noted that the scheme was set up for 2 reasons which are:

First, to provide members with the opportunity to practice the skills that the institute has equipped them with and secondly, to provide the opportunity for members of the society to get free services in resolving their disputes.

Dr. Elachi, said the event is to promote peaceful co-existence in the market and where there’s peace in the market there will be harmony in terms of socioeconomic relationship.

“Mediation provides the way to resolving issues amicably and ICMC, will be here for two days to avail market people the opportunity.”

He commended, the chairlady, ICMC Abuja branch Dr. Rosemary Chikwendu and her team for putting up the event. He also thanked GIZ for its support and urged it to extend it to more states.

The pioneer president, Chief Dr. Pady Njoku, said, market people need a conciliatory spirit to resolve disputes and urged them to utilize this opportunity provided by the ICMC Abuja branch as the institute is ready to assist them resolve their discrepancies. He also commended leadership of Dr, Rosemary and Dr. Ogbeifun for devoting their time to see that the event is a success.

The former President of the institute and chairman ICMCVMS National Committee, Dr.Luis Brown Ogbeifun, said the Mediation and Conciliation exercise organized by Abuja ICMC, is apt and timely.

He made this remark noting that the socio-economic spaces are hostile to both the sellers and buyers.

“It is timely because the eruption of anger could lead to violence, killings and hunger. Running business in a harsh environment could be daunting, complex and challenging. Not knowing how to manage dispute effectively can be a source of emotional and economic drain on disputers.

“It is in realization of this lacuna that it could cost the small-scale business owner that the initiative by ICMC becomes a veritable platform for the stakeholders and we do hold that they key into the way it has been conceptualized. The advantage of this initiative are numerous.

“The VMS, is suitable for all business owners to know that instead of resorting to damaged, self-help, they will be introduced to full-time mediation, which they could quickly deplore to resolve all disputes emanating from day-to-day business relationships.

“VMS offers a platform for speedy, cost -free resolution of minor claims for business, communities, domestic and family conflicts and those that do not have access to quick justice delivery.”

He added that aside the 5 states, the scheme has been launched in river state and Ondo.

“To bring to you the efficacy of the VMS, in Plateau state, the volunteers within 3 days were able to resolve 92 cases out of 111 cases that were listed.

“In Edo state, we had above 50%, resolved same as in Niger state. It has been a successful endeavor.

“The above cases were handled by ICMC timeously with no charges to the disputers. Therefore it will be said to be the meaning of an effective and efficient delivery of justice system, resting on the tripod of Access, Quickness and Affordability.

He extra-ordinarily thanked GIZ, for being a worthy partner in mediation endeavors. He lauded the mediators for sacrificing their time to serve humanity for free.

The National Policy Advisor at GIZ, Catherine Oginni, in her remark lauded the ICMC, for the pro-bone services the institute is rendering to the members of the society and stated the GIZ, will continue to lend its support to the institute.

“GIZ, has supported ICMC, on Volunteer Mediation Scheme in Edo state, Plateau state, Ogun state, Niger state and FCT, is the fifth state.

“As GIZ, we are interested because part of what we do is to improve the socio-economic condition for the SMEs in Nigeria, world bank easy of doing business and to identify contract enforcement and commercial dispute resolution as one of those barriers, and obstacles to business in Nigeria.

“We are supporting in these areas such that we are able to help promote commercial dispute resolution through mediation for SMEs in Nigeria. We are happy to be part of this program and we hope that Garki International Market Association will take advantage of this opportunity and bring forward as many cases as possible because we have people on ground to resolve all cases within the next 3 days.”

She applauded the ICMC for this laudable initiative.

The chairlady, ICMC Abuja branch Dr. Rosemary Chikwendu, welcomed all to the program and said the mission for the program is simple which is helping the market people to resolve their disputes amicably.
