Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has declared that he will remain politically active in Rivers State to campaign for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election, warning that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi would politically come after him if the President loses the 2027 election.

Wike made the remarks on Wednesday during his monthly media parley with selected journalists in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The former Rivers State governor dismissed speculation that his frequent visits to the state indicated an intention to relocate from Abuja, explaining that he needed to remain connected to his political base and personally monitor preparations for the 2027 election.

“You want me to fold my hands for Atiku Abubakar to come and win the election?” Wike asked.

He said he would not rely solely on assurances from political associates that everything was going well in Rivers State while remaining in Abuja.

“It’s not about relocating; it’s about coming home to relate with the people and talk to them, and also do those things you know how to do very well—not to take chances.

“So, I’m not relocating. I don’t need to relocate, but I also have to be in touch with my people so that I don’t just sit in Abuja and then say that everything is going on there well,” he said.

Wike said he needed to assess the political situation personally and ensure that necessary preparations were being made as the 2027 contest approached.

“I don’t want to sit in Abuja and candidates are saying, ‘Oh, don’t bother, everything is going on well.’ I have to come home and see that all those things are going on. ‘Have you done this? What about this?’” he stated.

The minister maintained that his regular presence in Rivers should not be interpreted as an abandonment of his responsibilities in the FCT, noting that his family, parents and longstanding political relationships remained rooted in the state.

Wike also declared that he would be among the first politicians targeted by the opposition if either Atiku or Obi defeats Tinubu in the presidential election.

According to him, his open and persistent support for the President’s re-election has made him a marked political opponent.

“I will be the first politician that I think they will come after. I will be the first politician. I know they will come for my head,” he said.

Despite acknowledging the political risks attached to his position, Wike insisted that he had no regrets and would remain committed to securing Tinubu’s victory.

“Each day I sleep, I am thinking about the President’s re-election. When I am eating, I think about the President’s re-election. Everything I am doing now is about the President’s re-election,” he stated.

Wike said he had faced sustained criticism and name-calling because of his support for Tinubu but remained undeterred.

“I don’t see where anybody in this country today has been called names the way my name has been. I am not bothered about people who say their own thing. My business is, like I said, I am going to support Mr President,” he declared.

The minister’s remarks further underline his continuing involvement in Rivers politics despite serving in the federal cabinet. They also signal his determination to mobilise his political structure against the opposition and in support of Tinubu ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
