Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Wednesday dismissed rumours about his death, declaring that he will not die anytime soon despite being 89 years old.

Obasanjo spoke in Abeokuta during a colloquium held to mark his 89th birthday, where he addressed the controversy surrounding a fake letter allegedly written by him to announce his death.

The elder statesman described those behind the publication as idle and mischievous.

He said, “For my final note in this address, I want to point your attention to the work of some never-do-well. They publish and circulate a fake paper credited to me that I am writing, giving notice of my death, pafuka.

“That is their wish and surely not God’s wish for me. God has assured me that He has more for me to do on earth and He has given me the wherewithal to do it. And those who wish otherwise are going to be dealt with by God Himself. I dey kampe as usual.”

Earlier in his remarks, Obasanjo had made his position clear, insisting that those spreading the rumours were wasting their time because “I dey kampe.”

Beyond the death rumour, the former president also reflected on leadership and Africa’s development, blaming the continent’s challenges on what he described as persistent leadership failure.

He maintained that Africa’s progress depends on honest, courageous and selfless leadership, while urging younger generations to take governance and democracy seriously.
