The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 32-year-old painter, Chigozie Michael Clement, for allegedly abducting a 7-year-old child in the Alapere area of the state.
The victim was rescued unhurt by operatives of the Command’s Special Squad I.
Spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the arrest and rescue in a statement signed on Thursday.
“Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command, Special Squad I, have arrested one Chigozie Michael Clement, male, aged 32, for the kidnapping of a 7-year-old child in Lagos,” the statement read.
Hundeyin explained that on 25 August 2025, the victim’s father reported at the Alapere Police Division that his son had been taken from their home without consent by his painter.
“Shortly after, the suspect called the victim’s mother, demanding ₦7,000,000 (Seven Million Naira) as ransom for the child’s release. Following the report, the case was transferred to the Special Squad I of the Command for discreet investigation,” he said.
According to the police, operatives traced the suspect to Ijegun, Lagos, on 27 August 2025, where he was arrested and the child was rescued from a locked room where he had been held captive. The victim has since been reunited with his family.
Hundeyin added that the suspect confessed to the crime, claiming he abducted the child in order to raise money for personal family needs.
He noted that investigations are ongoing to uncover possible accomplices and evidence, after which the case will be charged to court.
The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Olohundare Jimoh, reassured residents that the Command remains committed to deploying all available resources to combat crime across the state.
