Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo has resigned his position as Deputy Governor of Kano State, days after a Federal High Court declined to halt impeachment proceedings initiated against him by the state House of Assembly.

The resignation was confirmed on Friday evening by Ibrahim Shuaibu, Gwarzo’s Chief Press Secretary, and subsequently announced in a statement by Dr. Habibu Sale Mohammed, spokesperson of the Kwankwasiyya Movement.

The Kwankwasiyya Movement described the resignation as a difficult but necessary decision taken in the overall interest of the people and the stability of governance in Kano State.

“Recent circumstances have, to a considerable extent, constrained the full realization of the benefits and responsibilities attached to the office of the Deputy Governor. In view of this, it has become imperative to allow the office to function optimally in the best interest of the public it is meant to serve,” the statement said.

The movement was emphatic that Gwarzo’s resignation should not be interpreted as acceptance of the allegations levelled against him by the Kano State House of Assembly.

“For the avoidance of doubt, this resignation does not in any way constitute an admission of the allegations raised against him by the Kano State House of Assembly. The Deputy Governor maintains his innocence and firmly believes that his records in office and public service remain a testament to his integrity and commitment to the people,” the statement read.

The movement described the move as “an act of statesmanship” aimed at preserving peace and avoiding political tension that could hinder governance and development in the state.

The resignation comes just two days after a Federal High Court sitting in Kano on Wednesday declined an application by Gwarzo seeking to halt the impeachment process initiated by the state legislature.

The Kano State House of Assembly had earlier commenced impeachment proceedings against the deputy governor, setting the stage for his potential removal from office.

According to the Kwankwasiyya Movement, the former deputy governor will now channel his energy toward strengthening the political structure associated with former Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso ahead of the next electoral cycle.

“The Deputy Governor has also resolved to dedicate more time and energy to the Kwankwasiyya Movement, particularly in strengthening its structures, rebuilding strategies, and engaging in critical political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections,” the statement added.

The movement urged its supporters and residents of Kano State to remain calm, law-abiding, and committed to the ideals of good governance and democracy.

It assured that further details regarding Gwarzo’s next steps would be communicated in due course.

Gwarzo’s resignation ends what had become an increasingly untenable position, with the court’s refusal to intervene signalling that the impeachment process would likely have proceeded to its conclusion.

His declared intention to focus on the Kwankwasiyya Movement suggests that the political realignment in Kano ahead of 2027 will intensify, with the former deputy governor now free to engage in full-time political mobilisation without the constraints of office.

The vacancy created by his resignation will require the appointment of a new deputy governor, a decision that will rest with Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, subject to confirmation by the state House of Assembly.
